Meet the Team

History of Fernlea Orthopaedics

Orthopaedic surgery has been conducted in our clinics prior to 1999 when Dr Hamish Denny was providing a referral service. In 2002 Matthew Linnell joined Fernlea Veterinary Clinics as a primary care veterinary surgeon, he stayed within this role for several years whilst studying and completing his surgery certificate as well as training to perform orthopaedic procedures under the guidance of Dr Hamish Denny.

Fernlea orthopaedics was founded in 2012 when Matthew became a full time orthopaedic referral surgeon providing advice, procedures and treatment plans for small animals with various conditions.

Since then the service has expanded and we have developed further roles within the orthopaedic team to include a surgical intern in 2016, an orthopaedic administrator in 2018 and an additional referral surgeon in 2022.

Matt graduated from Bristol University in 1996 and initially worked in mixed and then in first-opinion small animal practice. He returned to Bristol and began practicing at Fernlea Veterinary Clinics in 2002, working alongside Dr Hamish Denny for 17 years until his retirement in 2019. Hamish mentored and constantly encouraged his surgical development throughout their time together.

Matt gradually transitioned into full-time orthopaedics, gained the RCVS Certificate in Small Animal Surgery in 2008 and RCVS Advanced Practitioner status when it launched in 2014. He has published and lectured nationally.

Matt established Fernlea Orthopaedics and has run the referral service for the last 13 years.
